Key takeaways
- ADHD is diagnosed by a clinical evaluation, not by a single test. A psychiatric provider can diagnose ADHD and start treatment in one or two visits. Formal psychological testing is a separate, longer service that earns its cost in specific situations.
- Which route you take usually depends on your insurance. IEHP and other Medi-Cal plans, Kaiser, commercial plans and self-pay each work differently, and this page walks through all of them.
- Every provider below was checked against its own website on September 24, 2026: phone numbers, offices, ages served, published fees and published insurance lists. Nothing here is an endorsement, and you should still confirm the details before you book.
- Self-pay testing in this region runs from about $1,500 for a focused ADHD evaluation to $6,000 or more for a full neuropsychological evaluation. Several clinics publish IEHP, Medi-Cal or a sliding scale. For a child, a written request to the school district starts a legal clock: within 15 calendar days the district must give you an assessment plan or a written explanation of why it declines, and any assessment it does is at no cost. A school evaluation decides eligibility for school services; it does not by itself establish a clinical diagnosis, and you can pursue both.
Do you need “testing,” or an evaluation?
Families and adults often call asking for “ADHD testing,” and the honest answer is that most people do not need a test battery to get an accurate diagnosis. ADHD is a clinical diagnosis. A qualified clinician makes it through a detailed interview about symptoms, history back to childhood, functioning at school, work and home, rating scales completed by the patient and by people who know them, and a careful look at other explanations such as sleep problems, anxiety, depression, learning disabilities or medical causes. The diagnostic manual in use today is the DSM-5-TR, published in 2022.1 ADHD is common: the CDC estimates that about 7 million U.S. children ages 3 to 17, or 11.7 percent, have a current ADHD diagnosis, and that about 6 percent of adults do.2
That kind of evaluation is what a psychiatric provider does. It is also what I do in my practice, for children from age 5 and for adults, in Redlands or by video across California. In California, ADHD can be diagnosed by physicians, by nurse practitioners and physician assistants working within their practice arrangements, and by psychologists. Psychologists do not prescribe, so if medication is part of the plan, a prescriber has to be involved either way.3
Formal psychological testing, done by a licensed psychologist over several hours, earns its cost in a few situations:
- The picture is unclear, or more than one condition may be present, such as ADHD plus a learning disability, autism or a mood disorder.
- A school, college, testing agency or employer requires a written psychological report for accommodations, such as extended time on the SAT, ACT, LSAT or a licensing exam.
- Your treating clinician asks for it to sort out a difficult diagnostic question.
- An adult wants a documented cognitive profile, for example when memory or processing complaints go beyond attention.
A full neuropsychological evaluation is the most extensive option. It maps memory, language, processing speed, executive function and more. It is usually reserved for questions like brain injury, seizures, stroke, dementia or complex developmental histories. For uncomplicated ADHD it is rarely necessary, and it is the most expensive route.
Which route fits?
| Route | What it is | Who does it | Typical timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clinical ADHD evaluation | Diagnostic interview, history, rating scales, screening for other causes, treatment plan | Psychiatric nurse practitioner, psychiatrist, physician, physician assistant | One to two visits |
| Psychological testing | Interview plus standardized tests of attention, cognition, learning and mood, with a written report | Licensed psychologist, sometimes with a supervised trainee | Several hours over one or more visits; report in about two to four weeks |
| Neuropsychological evaluation | Comprehensive testing of many brain functions with a detailed report | Neuropsychologist | One to two days of testing; report in several weeks |
| School psychoeducational assessment | Assessment for special education or a 504 plan | School psychologist and district team | About 60 days after signed consent |
| Telehealth evaluation companies | Video interview and questionnaires, sometimes ending in a diagnostic letter | Licensed psychologists or clinicians, who must hold a California license | One to three visits |
The billing codes matter only because insurance staff use them. Psychological testing is billed under CPT codes 96130 to 96139, and neuropsychological evaluation under 96132 and 96133 within that range.4 If you call your plan, asking whether “psychological testing, codes 96130 through 96139” is covered and whether it needs prior authorization will get you a clearer answer than asking about “ADHD testing.”
Start with your insurance
IEHP and other Medi-Cal plans. Medi-Cal covers medically necessary behavioral health care, and the way in is through your plan. With IEHP you do not need a referral for an initial mental health assessment: call Member Services at 1-800-440-4347 and ask for the Behavioral Health Department, or ask your primary care provider or pediatrician.5 Psychological testing by a psychologist is not on IEHP’s published list of behavioral health services that skip prior authorization, so testing generally has to be authorized in advance; the clinic requests it, and the request has to explain why testing, rather than a clinical evaluation, is needed.6 Molina members can call (888) 665-4621; a mental health assessment with a licensed provider needs no referral.7 Several providers in the directory below publish IEHP or Medi-Cal on their testing pages; they are grouped in the insurance lists at the end of the directory.
Kaiser Permanente. Kaiser Southern California members can call the mental health line at 1-833-579-4848 to schedule with a mental health clinician without a referral from a Kaiser physician; general appointments are 1-833-574-2273.8 Ask the department whether an ADHD evaluation or neuropsychological testing has to be arranged through your physician, because that routing varies by medical center. As with any HMO, testing outside Kaiser is usually covered only when Kaiser authorizes the referral.
Commercial plans (Aetna, Anthem, Blue Shield, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Optum and others). A clinical evaluation with a prescriber is an ordinary visit. Psychological testing is usually covered but often requires prior authorization, and the psychologist has to be in network for the exact product on your card, not just for the insurance brand. The directory lists the insurers each clinic publishes for its testing services. Treat those lists as a starting point, and confirm both the clinic and the individual evaluator with your plan.
Medicare, TRICARE and the VA. A few clinics list Medicare or TRICARE for testing. Veterans can ask their VA primary care team about psychological assessment or neuropsychology at VA Loma Linda.
Paying yourself. Ask for a written estimate that covers everything: intake, testing hours, scoring, the report and the feedback visit. If you are uninsured or not using insurance, federal law entitles you to a Good Faith Estimate when you schedule care in advance or when you ask for one.9 If the price is out of reach, three lower-cost routes exist in this region: the Loma Linda University Resiliency Clinic (sliding scale), Psychological Services of Riverside (sliding scale and trainee rates), and, for children, the school district evaluation.
Getting evaluated with us
The directory
Providers are grouped by area. Each entry shows what the practice itself publishes: offices, phone numbers, ages, format, cost and insurance, followed by the caveat we would want a patient to know. A practice with offices in more than one area is listed once, under its first area, with a pointer from the others. Use the filters to narrow the list to children or adults, an area, a health plan or a format. “Not published” means the practice’s website does not say; ask when you call. Where a practice does school-style (psychoeducational) evaluations by a Licensed Educational Psychologist, the entry says so, because a health plan or prescriber may not accept that report as a medical diagnosis. License numbers shown are the ones each practice publishes on its own site; you can verify any California license at search.dca.ca.gov.

The school route for children and teens
If your child is struggling in school, the district can evaluate at no cost. Put the request in writing, dated, to the principal or the district’s special education office, and keep a copy; a teacher’s written request starts the same clock. In California the district then has 15 calendar days, not counting school breaks longer than five school days, to give you a written assessment plan, and you have at least 15 days to decide whether to sign it. Once you sign consent, the district has 60 calendar days to complete the assessment and hold the IEP meeting, unless you agree in writing to an extension.10 The school evaluation decides whether your child qualifies for special education under a category such as autism or other health impairment, which is where ADHD sits under federal rules; that decision is made for school purposes and does not by itself establish a clinical diagnosis.11 It is done by school staff, it is free, and it is often the fastest evaluation a family can get. It does not replace a medical evaluation when medication or outside services are being considered, and many families do both. Our essay on IEP vs. 504 plans explains what each plan can offer.
Nine questions to ask before you book
These are the questions we would ask on your behalf. Most can be answered by the front desk in a five-minute call.
- Do you evaluate for this age and this question? Say the age and whether you want an ADHD evaluation, an autism evaluation or both.
- What kind of evaluation is it? A clinical diagnostic evaluation, psychological testing, a full neuropsychological evaluation or a school-style assessment.
- Who does the testing and who signs the report? Ask for the name and license type. A supervised trainee or technician may do parts of the testing; a licensed psychologist should supervise and sign. You can check any California license at search.dca.ca.gov.
- Where does the testing happen, and is any of it by video? The office on the website is not always where testing takes place.
- Are you in network with the exact plan on my card, for testing? A clinic can be in network for therapy and not for testing. Ask them to confirm the evaluator, the location and the product name on your card.
- Is a referral or prior authorization needed, and who requests it? Ask what happens if authorization is denied.
- What is the total cost in writing? Intake, testing hours, scoring, report, feedback session and the cancellation policy.
- Will the report do what I need? Treatment planning, school or college accommodations, workplace accommodations, Regional Center eligibility or ABA authorization each have their own requirements.
- What is the wait? The first appointment, the testing dates, the feedback visit and the written report are four different dates.
What to bring, and what happens after
Bring old report cards or school records, any earlier evaluations or IEPs, a list of current medications, and the names of a teacher, partner or parent who can complete rating scales. Adults are usually asked about childhood, so a parent’s or sibling’s memory helps. Sleep well the night before testing and bring glasses or hearing aids.
After testing, you should get a feedback session and a written report that states the diagnosis, explains the reasoning and makes specific recommendations. Share it with your prescriber, your child’s school or a college disability office as needed. If something in the report does not match what you see at home, say so at the feedback visit; a good evaluator wants that information.
How this directory was built, and its limits
This list grew out of a public-source research inventory of 130 evaluation resources in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, nearby counties and California telehealth. Every entry here was then checked against the provider’s own website on September 24, 2026: office addresses, phone numbers, ages served, what the practice says it evaluates, published fees and published insurance lists. Entries whose websites no longer support the service, or that only offer therapy, ABA or legal evaluations, were left out.
What this page cannot do: it did not call any office, verify any license, confirm any wait time or check any insurance contract. Websites change, clinicians move and contracts end. Confirm everything with the office and with your health plan before you book. Listing here is not an endorsement, no provider paid to appear, and we have no financial relationship with any of them. If you find an error, contact us and we will fix it.
